I find determinism placed on my shoulders via the philosophy of materialism. Materials do indeed hold a great amount of power, and must in this sense direct me. I am certainly not a materials engineer, nor do I have the capacity to understand materials at a molecular level. I will never be able to invite materials into my practice with the intensity of a scientist or engineer. I let materials have their own distinction. I am fascinated with materials whether natural, or synthetic, raw or intervened with. Materials do the walking in my work, certainly I have some influence upon them, but it is not without their coercion upon me.
